Mark's further correspondence with SBS

Update on SBS:

I wrote to SBS on 13 July as a submission for their Code of Practice review. I hoped they would not adopt the ridiculous watermarking practice and that they would put something in black & white to prevent such stupidity.

Imagine my dismay when I turned on SBS on 22 July to find: a watermark!

I then wrote them again (27 July) to express my major disappointment at this new development, especially in light of the fact that I had written to them twice previously (February and April) to prevent such a pointless and counter-productive occurrence.

Here are their two replies:

The irony is obvious.

Re: SBS Codes of Practice review

SBS would like to thank you for your submission to its review of the
SBS Codes of Practice. SBS values your input and your comments will be
taken into consideration.

After receiving public submissions and also submissions and comments
from SBS staff, SBS is considering all issues raised and is developing
draft Codes of Practice. These draft amendments will be considered by
the SBS Board and made available for public comment. This will again be
considered internally and by the SBS Board. The SBS Board will approve
the final document, which will be published and come into effect during
2006.

Yours sincerely

Julie Eisenberg
Head of Policy

1 August 2005

I am writing to (you) in relation to your correspondence dated 27 July ’05 regarding the use of watermarks which SBS received on 29 July ‘05

As the use of watermarks is currently not covered in SBS's Code of Practice, your letter has been assessed as an informal complaint. As a result, your letter has been forwarded to the Head of Television for his information.

SBS appreciates the time taken to provide us with your feedback, and thanks you for your interest in SBS Television."

Yours sincerely,

Sally Begbie
Audience Affairs Manager.
